Celebrating a Decade at the Eikon: The Enduring Legacy of the Belfast Championship Dog Show

22 August 2025

celebrating a decade at the eikon the enduring legacy of the belfast championship dog show
For generations, the Belfast Championship Dog Show stood proudly at the heart of Belfast life, deeply intertwined with the iconic King's Hall whose grand structure and rich agricultural heritage, was more than a location — it was a symbol of tradition, community, and excellence.

Reflecting on those years, Ian Wilson of the Belfast Championship Dog Show recalls:
“The King’s Hall was part of our identity. The atmosphere was electric — the sound of paws echoing through the hall, the camaraderie of exhibitors, the excitement in the air. It was where many of us discovered our passion for the world of dog shows. Those memories are etched in our hearts.”

The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (proprietors of the King’s Hall), ever forward-looking, made the bold decision to move from the historic King’s Hall to a new home outside Lisburn. There, they developed Balmoral Park and established a state-of-the-art venue to meet the growing needs of modern events. In 2015, the Eikon Exhibition Hall was opened — a new era for RUAS and for the Belfast Championship Dog Show.

A New Home, A New Chapter
The transition to the Eikon Exhibition Centre marked more than just a change in venue. It was a milestone in the evolution of one of the UK’s most respected dog shows — an opportunity to grow, to innovate, and to honour tradition in a fresh setting.

Ian Wilson reflects on that pivotal moment:
“There was a sense of excitement and responsibility. We knew we had the chance to carry our legacy forward in a space that offered everything we needed to elevate the show. The King’s Hall gave us our foundation, but the Eikon gave us our future.”

That sentiment is shared by Jackie Stubbs, a cornerstone of the show’s organising team:
“The Eikon felt like home almost immediately. It’s a venue that gives us freedom — to grow, to innovate, and to deliver an experience that truly honours our exhibitors, our spectators, and most of all, our dogs.”

A World-Class Venue for a World-Class Event
From its spacious halls and cutting-edge facilities to its visitor-friendly layout, the Eikon Exhibition Centre has transformed the Belfast Championship Dog Show into a modern showcase of canine excellence. With more room for competition rings, improved grooming areas, enhanced accessibility, and seamless logistics, the show has never been more inviting — or more prestigious.

Visitors now enjoy a welcoming, polished experience from start to finish, while breeders and handlers benefit from the comfort and professionalism the Eikon offers. It’s no surprise that the show continues to attract increasing numbers of participants from across the UK, Ireland, and beyond.

A True Partnership with Shared Vision
As the Belfast Championship Dog Show celebrates a decade at its new home, its relationship with the Eikon Exhibition Centre team — and the RUAS — has proven to be one of mutual respect and collaboration. The partnership is more than functional; it’s inspirational.

“The team at the Eikon has been fantastic,” says Jackie Stubbs. “They understand our event, and they work alongside us every year to make it better. Their support has been key to our success.”

Ian Wilson agrees:
“What’s most exciting is the shared vision. The Eikon team are innovative, proactive, and always open to ideas. With their continued support, we’re building not just a great show — we’re shaping the future of dog showing in Northern Ireland.”

Looking Back with Pride, Forward with Purpose
As the Eikon Exhibition Centre marks its 10th anniversary, the moment is a perfect time to reflect on a remarkable journey — from the echoing corridors of the King’s Hall to the bright, modern halls of the Eikon Exhibition Centre. Through it all, the Belfast Championship Dog Show has remained a cherished event, grounded in tradition but always evolving.
This celebration is more than a milestone; it’s a tribute — to the enduring bond between the Show and the RUAS (proprietors of the Eikon Exhibition Centre), to the memories of yesterday, and to the bright future ahead.

A Legacy of Excellence
The Belfast Championship Dog Show is not just a competition — it is a living tradition. It celebrates the spirit of community, the art of breeding, and the timeless love between people and their dogs. With the unwavering support of the Venue’s team and the world-class facilities of the centre, this legacy is not only preserved — it is thriving.
