Sustainability in Action: The Eikon Exhibition Centre’s Commitment to a Greener Future
At the Eikon Exhibition Centre, sustainability is more than a box to tick — it's a core part of every decision we make. We’re committed to exploring every opportunity to operate sustainably, while partnering with event organisers to help them achieve their own unique sustainability goals — from major events like the Balmoral Show to niche exhibitions and trade shows.
Our Green Team: Champions of Sustainability
Leading the charge is our dedicated Green Team, a passionate group of staff members from across Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (proprietors of the Eikon Exhibition Centre) who work together to drive our sustainability agenda forward. The team explores every opportunity to improve our environmental footprint — from measuring and reducing carbon emissions to sourcing eco-conscious suppliers, promoting sustainable event practices, and embedding environmental responsibility into every stage of planning and delivery.
The Green Team also works closely with external event organisers who hire the Eikon Exhibition Centre, to help deliver on their own sustainability objectives. We believe collaboration is key — and by sharing our knowledge, tools, and commitment, we empower others to reduce their environmental impact too.
Tackling Waste Head-On
As Northern Ireland's largest events campus the volume of waste produced can be significant. We take this seriously and have robust systems in place to ensure that all waste is managed in a responsible and sustainable way.
We are proud to partner with RiverRidge, a leading waste management company based in Northern Ireland. Their expertise enables us to maximise recycling, repurposing, and recovery, with a strong focus on diverting waste from landfill.
We were delighted to join the team at RiverRidge recently for a behind-the-scenes look at how waste from our site is processed and repurposed. The visit strengthened our commitment to sustainability and gave us valuable insight into the full waste management lifecycle. We are thankful to Pamela, Kelly, and the entire RiverRidge team for an engaging and informative morning.
Looking Ahead
Our sustainability journey is ongoing. We continue to explore greener technologies and smarter infrastructure, such as energy-efficient lighting and water-saving systems.
We’re continually improving how we measure and reduce the venue’s environmental impact — whether for RUAS-organised events or those hosted by external organisers — supporting all stakeholders in making informed and responsible decisions.
